How Formal Shoes Became a Streetwear Staple

For years, it was simple. Trainers for everyday. Formal shoes for occasions. One lived in your rotation, the other stayed boxed up until a wedding invite landed. Well, not anymore. Dressing more sharply is now easier more than ever, without necessarily dressing up. We’re talking Derbies with denim, boat shoes with oversized cargos, polished leather peeking out beneath relaxed tailoring.

What’s torched this crossover? Part of it is a pendulum swing in fashion itself. As sneakers have dominated for a decade, people have started craving something with a bit more structure and heritage, but that doesn’t feel old-fashioned. Something with weight. The likes of Paraboot Michael have become poster children for this moment: an 80-year-old Derby shoe originally built for utility that now sits squarely in the ‘everyday’ category. Its thick rubber sole and honest leather upper make it rugged enough for jeans or parachute pants, but its clean lines still read smarter than your average sneaker. And it’s not just Paraboot.

Even traditionally relaxed brands are part of the shift. This is where brands like Novesta, Birkenstock and Clarks Originals come in too. Birkenstock’s comfy Naples is a slip-on silhouette that works as easily with tailored pants as it does with wide cargos. Meanwhile, the Timberland Heritage Lace Up Shoe taps into workwear codes that have always sat close to street culture. Worn with double-kneed trousers or washed denim, it leans rugged rather than rigid. And then there’s the understated versatility of the Novesta Trampky. While technically rooted in plimsoll design, its stripped-back shape fits perfectly into this smarter shift, proof that “formal” doesn’t have to mean stiff.

Loafers have arguably led the charge in this shift, too, especially in softer materials like suede loafers that feel relaxed. They pair just as well with cropped trousers and sports socks as they do with loose denim or skirts. Newer hybrids like the New Balance 1906L Loafer and adidas Originals Handball Spezial Loafer blur the line between sneaker and slip-on, silhouettes that carry the ease of a trainer but with a sharper, more considered edge, exactly where modern dressing is heading.

If sneakers defined the early 2020s, this chapter feels more balanced. Where leathers sit alongside mesh and styles that might’ve once been dusty relics in the wardrobe are now anchors for outfits that balance polish with comfort.
