Secrets of The Shoe Trade is a new series on the Crockett & Jones website, in their ‘The Article’ section, in which I had the pleasure of kicking off the first part of that series by talking about genuine leather insoles. This idea was born from my recent trip to the Crockett & Jones factory, where I got to finally ‘peek behind the curtain’ and see the production of England’s most famous shoemaker.
During this visit, I had a nice, long talk with the owner of the factory, Jonathan Jones (also Managing Director), as well as the Head of Marketing & E-Commerce, James Fox. It was nice to chat about the world of shoes today, versus 20-30 years ago, and with a look to where it might be in another 20-30 years’ time. We reminisced over the ‘good ‘ol days’ as well as talked about the things that separate good brands from great brands. It got us thinking about the things no one ever thinks or talks about when speaking of welted shoes: The inside components.
We are often so fixated on the looks, the fancy details, etc, that we forget that the ingredients inside of what are often the core foundation of a solid, well-made shoe.
