If you’ve been curious about this American heritage bootmaker, as I have for a few years now, this Grant Stone Boot Review takes a closer look at their Garrison model in black waxed deer. Known for offering entry-level Goodyear welted footwear at a fair price, Grant Stone has built a loyal following in a fairly quick time. In this review, I break down the packaging, fit, sizing, and overall quality to see how the Garrison stacks up in today’s market.
Who Is Grant Stone?
Grant Stone is an American brand known for producing “entry-level” Goodyear welted footwear. They built their reputation largely around boots—bridging rugged Americana with Alden and Red Wing inspiration—but their collection also includes loafers, derbies, and classic lace-ups. Unlike many heritage bootmakers, Grant Stone takes a slightly more refined approach while keeping their roots firmly in the U.S. tradition, but with overseas production.

Packaging & First Impressions
From the moment the box arrived, it was clear that Grant Stone pays attention to detail. The sturdy, flush-lid box is more durable than the typical shoebox. Inside, the boots were wrapped in a heavy canvas wrap rather than tissue paper—an upgrade that feels substantial, especially for rugged footwear. Small touches, like a signed inspection card and an information sheet on fit, reinforce the brand’s personal connection with customers. The bags were nice and large (a detail sometimes overlooked but makes a difference).

The Garrison Boot in Black Waxed Deer
The Garrison is a derby-style boot with a casual wedge sole (not all come with this sole), built for comfort and everyday wear. The black waxed deer leather gives it a rugged aesthetic that will age well with scuffs, scratches, and patina. The Vibram wedge sole keeps it comfortable for long days, while the contrasting look of the sole balances casual styling with practical durability. The sole was surprisingly comfortable. It felt like walking on supportive pillows. Literally.
This isn’t a dress boot—it’s a lifestyle boot, perfect for jeans, flannel, or casual wear. For me, it’s an ideal fit for the Pacific Northwest climate, where weather, terrain, and style lean more casual. And where I plan to return to shortly. They will fit perfectly with my new lifestyle there.

Construction & Details
- Goodyear welted construction (not hand welted, but solid for the price. Read more here on value brands in the welted industry).
- 270-degree welt instead of 360, keeping the heel trim and avoiding bulk. A detail I appreciate.
- Round last shape that isn’t overly bulbous, making it versatile for different builds. Another win for me!
- Full-grain leather heel counter, a detail appreciated by enthusiasts who value durability and authenticity. For those with sensitive heels.
- Made in China—though in this case, quality stands out, proving that modern Chinese factories can compete with European makers.

Sizing & Fit of the Garrison Boot
Grant Stone boots generally run half a size large compared to dress shoes. My regular dress shoe size is US 7.5, and the US 7D fits me perfectly. The brand also offers multiple widths (D, E, EE), making them accessible to a wide range of feet—something relatively rare in ready-to-wear boots.
Price & Value
At $435 USD, the Garrison boot sits firmly in today’s entry-level Goodyear welted price bracket. Ten years ago, that entry point was below $300, but times have changed, and $400–450 now represents the starting tier. For the construction, fit, and quality offered, Grant Stone delivers strong value.

Final Thoughts on my Grant Stone Boot Review
The Grant Stone Garrison Boot impressed me with its thoughtful packaging, rugged yet comfortable design, and accessible price point for the value in return. While not a dress shoe, it’s an excellent casual option for anyone who appreciates welted construction but needs something versatile and hard-wearing.
Would I wear them every day in the city? No. But for weekends, casual travel, or life in the Pacific Northwest, they’re a boot I’ll happily keep in rotation.
Grant Stone has earned their reputation as a strong entry-level brand, and the Garrison is a great example of why.
