In Defense of Hooded Eyes: Why We Love Them?

A few days ago, a new photoshoot of JLaw went viral online, debuting a strikingly different look. As a classic American beauty, Lawrence has always been celebrated for her distinctive features—most notably, her signature hooded eyes. Yet, in these recent pictures, those eyelids appeared to be looking different. Whether Jennifer Lawrence achieved this through cosmetic tape or a blepharoplasty, the internet is still guessing.

The reaction was swift, and people were genuinely upset. For a lot of her fans, those hooded eyes were one of her most beautiful and defining features. But this conversation is bigger than just Jennifer’s new look. We are seeing so many celebrities and influencers opting to remove their heavy lids, and honestly, it often leaves them looking completely unrecognizable after the change.

As someone who also has hooded eyes, I wanted to write a short piece in praise of a feature that is too often—and unfairly—framed as a flaw. So, here are five little praises for anyone starting to doubt their natural beauty, or feeling pressured to “fix” something that was never broken to begin with.

#1. Hooded eyes are sexy:

A little ”imperfection” goes a long way. A unique feature like hooded eyes makes your gaze appear sexier and sultrier. It adds mystery and depth to your look, making your face much more attractive. When you think of all the beautiful actors and actresses with naturally hooded eyes, their eyes are usually the number one thing you remember about them. Whether it’s Jennifer Lawrence, Gwyneth Paltrow, or Lucy Liu with her amazing monolids, their eyes are easily one of their most attractive features.

#2. They are perfect for makeup:

While most of us believe that heavy hooded lids make your eyes uncomfortable to apply makeup on, they can be surprisingly perfect for a lot of makeup variations. Hooded eyes can pull off very thick graphic eyeliner. They are great for smoky eyes, and they can handle heavy accents on the lower lash line. As celebrity makeup artist Kirin Bhatty perfectly summarized in an interview with L’OFFICIEL:

“Hooded eyes are just another canvas, so ultimately it’s about rethinking techniques and tailoring them to work for you.”

#3. They don’t distract from the rest of your face:

They’re strikingly appealing without stealing the show. Hooded eyelids let you play up other areas without overwhelming your look. For example, you can accentuate your brows or wear a bold lip while keeping your eye makeup more neutral. This keeps everything perfectly balanced.

#4. A naturally powerful, piercing expression:

The physical structure of a hooded eye naturally sits the brow slightly lower over the eye, creating a resting expression that looks strong, focused, and enigmatic. It’s an inherently dramatic feature that commands attention without any makeup at all. So, if you prefer a no-makeup look, your hooded eyes give you a huge advantage here!

#5. Heavy eyelids protect your eyes:

Naturally hooded eyes serve as physical protection for your eyes. That extra fold of skin and heavier brow bone help to shield the delicate surface of your eyelids and your eyes from the wind and bright sunlight.

Concluding…

So, this little blog post for Melanfolia wasn’t written to shame anyone, mock their appearance, or push my thoughts onto anyone. Everyone is free to do whatever they want with their appearance. They shouldn’t be judged for that, and there are many reasons why people might want to alter or remove their natural features. I just wanted to create something that might help you change your mind, accept your own appearance, and maybe even find some benefits and advantages in it.

If you need a bit more inspiration and some tips on how to work with your naturally hooded eyes, I’ve created a post for LZBRGL called ”Makeup for Hooded Eyes: 10 Celebrity Looks and Tips” where I collected some of the best celebrity makeup tips for hooded eyes, so feel free to grab some inspiration for your next look!
