What are toners for?

Toners act as a second cleansing step, removing any residual impurities or makeup that your cleanser might have missed. Furthermore, toners can help restore your skin’s natural pH balance, which can be disrupted by cleansing.

Beyond cleansing, toners prepare your skin for the rest of your skincare routine. They can hydrate, soothe, refine pores and even treat specific skin concerns depending on their formulation. Many toners now contain active ingredients that target issues like acne, dryness, or signs of ageing, meaning that they can be a crucial inclusion in your daily routine.

When should you use one?

Toners should be applied immediately after cleansing and before your serums and moisturiser. This will allow the toner to double cleanse and effectively prep your skin, enhancing the absorption and efficacy of subsequent products. Most people use a toner as a part of their morning and evening skincare routine, but if you have sensitive skin you may want to follow a simplified routine in the morning and include your toner in your evening regime.

What ingredients should you look for?

The best ingredients for your toner depend on your skin type and concerns. If you want something hydrating, look for hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and aloe vera to provide moisture without heaviness.

For exfoliation, try glycolic acid, salicylic acid, and lactic acid to help remove dead skin cells and unclog pores. Centella asiatica, panthenol, and chamomile calm irritated or sensitive skin. Niacinamide and vitamin C help even skin tone and boost radiance so are good for brightening, while antioxidants green tea, vitamin E, and other antioxidants protect skin from environmental damage.
