A cannoli-themed Adidas Samba is about to touch down in New New York City smack dab in the middle of the annual Feast of San Gennaro.
The Asphalt x Adidas Samba will release next week with a limited run 600 individually numbered pairs. A patent leather upper reps chocolate with its dark brown base, the shell with a tan T-toe and mustache and candied cherries with the Three Stripes. Swappable kiltie lace shrouds offer the choice of the same three flavors, as does an assortment of laces that adds a chocolate chip-like pattern as a forth option.
Actual cannolis are depicted through gold-tone metal lace dubraes, and an even more realistic rendition of the desert appears on the insole.
“So much of what makes New York special comes from the things we grow up seeing every day,” Jadah Orilus, operations manager and buyer at Asphalt NYC, said in a press release. “The neighborhood bakery, grabbing a box of pastries for family, knowing exactly which spot has your favorite cannoli or rainbow cookie. We wanted to take something that feels familiar to so many New Yorkers and translate it through an Asphalt lens. The result is playful and nostalgic, but still leaves room for everyone to make it their own.”
This year marks the 100th edition of the Feast of San Gennaro, which celebrates the patron saint of Naples and has been hosted on Mulberry Street since Italian immigrants began the tradition. Those who haven’t been to festival themselves have likely seen it depicted on-screen, as it was the setting for a young Vito corleone murdering Don Fanucci in “The Godfather Part 2.”
Thursday’s announcement of the sneaker coincides with the first day of the feast, which runs through Sept. 27.
The Asphalt x Adidas Samba will release Sept. 25 through Asphalt’s stores and website. Pricing is set at $130.
