ASICS GEL-CUMULUS 16 says hello to Carnaby Street

Originally launched in 2014, the ASICS GEL-CUMULUS 16 is making quite the comeback this year. Getting its name from ‘cumulus clouds’ – also known as ‘fluffy clouds’ – the clue is in the name with this one. Returning in four new colourways, this silhouette really does have that cloud-like cushioning with every step.

To celebrate its comeback, we wanted to bring the CUMULUS experience to the size? community. Our London Carnaby Street store provided the setting for our very own ‘Cloud Lab’, where we invited visitors to take a closer look at the silhouette, as well as get up close and personal with the famed GEL technology. If touchable GEL wasn’t your thing, then we also had candy floss for everyone.

ASICS GEL-CUMULUS 16

Originally designed as a long-distance running shoe, the GEL-CUMULUS 16 has taken on a new role within the lifestyle space. Highlights from the latest collection include the autumn-ready ‘Port Royal’ and striking ‘Independence Blue’ iterations, while more neutral-inspired designs offer options for everyday staples.

Open mesh lays the foundations for the upper, while glossy synthetic leather overlays and no-sew panelling dance across the top to deliver a tech-fuelled aesthetic reminiscent of the 2010s. Magic happens below. ASICS has left the trainer’s cushioning properties from its running days intact, which leaves behind pure comfort that you regularly find yourself reaching for. Within the rounded, cloud-shaped midsole, you will find dual GEL inserts, FLUIDRIDE technology and FLYTEFOAM, a combination that is destined for the best underfoot feeling.

What is ASICS GEL Technology?

Back in the ‘80s, after learning silicone could protect raw eggs dropped from an 18 metre height and reduce vibrations in machinery, ASICS asked the question, “What can silicone do for runners’ knees?”. A great question that has led to nearly 40 years of rapid innovation and advanced footwear technology.

Fusing the infamous GEL technology with foam structures, ASICS has perfected the formula for comfort. While every generation of GEL has its benefits, the core principles are: enhanced comfort, improved stability, and a more natural feel. Tried and tested across the globe, including ourselves at size? HQ, we think it’s safe to say that GEL technology really does offer shock-absorbing protection and a very comfy ride.

If you like the sound of the GEL-CUMULUS 16, head over to size? and have a look.
